Enable "Media device (MTP)" USB mode on Android 4.4 (KitKat) and 5.0 (Lollipop)

Android "Media Device (MTP)" mode notificationSince I only wanted to charge my new Nexus 5 at work rather than having my phone content exposed to company hardware, I disabled "Media device (MTP)" USB mode there. This is actually easy since there is a shortcut in the notifications which let's you do just that.

The tricky part is to turn that back on when you are back home and want to connect your KitKat phone to your private computer. The system won't find the phone unless "USB computer connection" on your Android is either set to "Media device (MTP)" or "Camera (PTP)". The notifiction which used to be there in MTP mode is gone so there is no shortcut to get back to that setting.

Android "Storage" overview screenAfter looking for that setting for ages, going through every possible menu and exploring the deeps of Android 4.4, I was about to give up when I finally found the menu I was looking for, well hidden as a tiny "more options" button within the "Storage" overview screen.

Android "USB computer connection" settingsTouching that will finally bring you to the "USB computer connection" settings where you can choose either one of the available options to make your phone visible to your computer again.

I guess providing a "Select USB connection mode" notification with a shortcut to that screen would have been too easy.

Update 25.11.2014:

This issue is still present in Android 5.0 (Lollipop) and the solution is still the same. I will never understand why they reworked the user experience but didn't fix this annoying usability problem.

Update 15.10.2015:

Almost two years later, this issue has finally been fixed in Android 6.0 (Marshmallow) by introducing the previously missing notification which now allows the user to choose between "Charging only", "Transfer files (MTP)", "Transfer photos (PTP)" and "MIDI".

Samsung / Sony / <insert brand here> phone owners:
Please read the comments if you are having trouble finding the settings on your device. Some manufacturers go their own way in user interface design so everything looks and works a bit different. I cannot cover all those devices in this blog.

At least not here.

I don't know if you are aware what a personal blog is but contrary to popular belief I'm neither a Samsung nor a general Android help desk. I just share the knowledge I accumulate while trying to solve a problem which is for some reason not already sufficiently documented in the world wide web.

And to be honest: That "ASAP" attitude is rude and definitely won't help you at all.

Ask Samsung how they always manage to fuck up their quite decent hardware by shipping the crappiest junk in terms of software along with it. After all, you payed money for that shit so they should be the ones having to deal with confused customers like you.

This is nothing against you personally. I know how having to deal with today's quality standards feels like. I'm just a little annoyed by people confusing my personal blog for a customer support hotline.

thanks for the reply although it's so depressed one. for behalf on my attitude, i'm really sorry for that and thanks again. No offended because i'm in so confused situation. Sorry again :)

I did the same thing. Turned of that bull crap in the pop up notifications and wow you really can't find that option to turn it back on. Wonder how many people trash their phone after they can't get it to charge again. I'm not sure why android would make it so difficult to find that setting but fuck them and thank you very much

This fix no longer works if your device is running the current Android 5.0+ software. This fix works on my Kit Kat devices but not my Lollipop devices.

Even worse: the more menu is disabled with a SD card mounted. I had to unmount the SD card, remove it, and reboot the device to have the USB option menu back again!

JustHeather's picture

Thank you! I removed the SD card and low and behold, I was able to connect my phone to my computer. What a pain!

Even more insane on Samsung Galaxy S3 with 4.3! Above (hidden) setting does not seem to exist. Have to connect to USB on PC, then trial and error found under swipe down (status bar) drop down menu where user needs to enter USB setting where there is option to enable android settings Camera PTP mode. Note the system won't show find the phone unless "USB computer connection" on your Android is either set to "Media device (MTP)" or "Camera (PTP)". Now getting Helium on Android to understand that it has been already been enabled on PC is the next frustration to overcome, yes am determined to take up the heritage to be an overcomer!

Guys I found how to enable MTP in my Xperia Z1 running Lollipop 5.0.2. Its Under Settings-->Xperia Connectivity-->USB Connectivity. Firstly ensure that USB is disconnected from your Phone otherwise it won't work. I need to mention that the process stated above might be working in Kitkat, But as said above in Settings-->Storage option their no such thing as three dots for more options in Upper Right corner in Lollipop. Hence in my Xperia the thing was found in Xperia Connectivity in Settings.

Normally I dont bother with posting on blogs or whatnot but after i ran into the same problem I thought i might share my solution.
First of all, all the solutions here did not work for me since the "Usb connection" menu entry just brought up a quick toast message saying something about USB disconnected and that was that.
Since I am stubborn and refused to reinstall,,i did some digging.
Solution :
Rooted device required. Terminal required..
1. Open Terminal
Type su Press Enter
Type setprop persist.sys.usb.config mtp Press Enter
2. Developer Option >> Enable USB debugging
3. Connect Phone to PC with USB & uncheck and recheck MTP in USB connection settings

And that did the trick for me.
Hope it helps someone..

Cheers folks
